![]() The similarity has been noted since the early days of Hong’s career, but it feels especially accurate now, with his newfound interest in religion, a theme common to Rohmer’s work. Hong uncomfortably and faithfully renders relationships that carry history-it’s this astuteness that has earned him many a comparison to the French New Wave director Éric Rohmer. Of course, the film is not explicitly-or even accurately-about Hong and Kim, but the cathartic yelling between two lovers feels therapeutic. Hong plays with our expectations, but instead gives us the fantasy of that confrontation, saying everything you ever wanted to say to an ex-lover. In a soju-fueled explosion, Young-hee screams back, “Why make it about someone you loved? Trying to lessen your torment?” The director responds, “I need to cast off my regrets.” At the film’s conclusion, Young-hee wakes up on the beach, and no resolution has been met-the entire argument happened in a dream. By the end of the film, the two are reunited, and the director tells her he’s making a film about a person he loved. Similarly, in Hong’s 2017 On the Beach at Night Alone, Kim plays Young-hee, an out-of-work actress still spiraling from an affair with a filmmaker. This hotel, a hideout of sorts for both the poet and the woman, feels removed from the real world simultaneously, it feels removed from the real-life drama that has hampered Hong and Kim’s artistic partnership. Through these orbiting parties, Hong plots comedic run-ins and mistimings to look back on life from a more ruminative, even existential perspective. It is about two different, unrelated parties staying at a hotel-one, an aging poet, whose two adult sons visit him and the second, a heartbroken woman, whose friend comes to comfort her. The film marks a new point of maturity and eschews the kind of biographical subtext that has fanned the flames of Hong and Kim’s affair. In fact, for the first time her love interest (or assumed love interest) does not appear on the screen. Hong’s recent film Hotel by the River employs many of the aforementioned elements, but without pitting Kim against another slurring lover. In many of them, Kim’s professional life becomes threatened because of her love life, too. ![]() In most of them, Kim becomes the center of an awkward romantic situation-by drunken pursuit or misjudgment. Since 2015’s Right Now, Wrong Then, Kim has starred in every single Hong film (a total of six films in less than four years), with the exception of 2016’s Yourself and Yours. Kim Min-hee and Hong Sang-soo at the Berlin Film Festival, 2019. What’s more, Hong seemed to be confessing his infidelity over and over again through his films. Affairs-and public knowledge of them-may be more commonplace in Hollywood, but adultery was illegal in South Korea until 2015, an exacerbating factor in this real-life drama. Hong’s wife was reluctant to divorce him, and websites even published alleged text exchanges between the two women. In 2016, the filmmaker, then 55, was embroiled in a very public scandal over an extramarital affair with 34-year-old actress Kim Min-hee. His recent rise in recognition in his home country, though, has less to do with critical acclaim and more to do with his personal life. ![]() Hong has never enjoyed huge box-office success-at home or internationally-but he has, in recent years, become a fixture at Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and Locarno. ![]() His films have been called too talky, too heady, maddingly recursive, and confusing-especially since many are rendered dreamlike by time jumps, narrative shifts, and deus ex machina-but Hong’s catalog reflects that of a filmmaker working through his ideas: of love and all the regrets, what if’s, and do-overs that come with it. Shot using long takes and zooms that may seem innocuous or lazy, his cinematography reflects the wandering eyes of his characters and Hong’s own attention to detail. Since debuting in 1996, Hong has used his films to probe the darker sides of modern romance.

The lawsuits, which allege misstatements going back to January 2021, contend the training AppHarvest provided to workers was “a joke,” that its workforce “suffered massive attrition, churn and COVID-19-related absences that negatively affected productivity” and that its first harvest last year was “ravaged by operational issues” and 50% was wasted. “AppHarvest will change that, and it will do so by building a sustainable, durable business in Appalachia, and investing in the people who call it home.” “The last few months have taught us that our food system is a little more precarious than we realized,” Vance said in an August 2020 article in Greenhouse Grower. Spokesperson Taylor Van Kirk also emphasized that the actions were all filed after Vance left the board. Your best bet is to prioritize what you want to grow and think of your landscape as planting islands. Sometimes builders will bring in soil for new housing developments, but it’s usually not very much and sometimes can be from poor materials like sandy clay. I-35 helps to physically separate the western Edwards Plateau from the eastern Blackland Prairies region here in Austin. Topsoil replacement on reclaimed mine lands is vital for improved infiltration, plant rooting media, enhanced nutrient cycling, and as a potential source of plant propagules to increase plant community diversity. The Edwards Plateau is characterized by thin soils on top of exposed limestone Varying topsoil depth may influence reclamation success. This study assessed the long-term (24 years) effects of four topsoil replacement depths (0, 20, 40, and 60 cm) on plant community attributes (species richness, diversity, canopy cover, and production) and soil characteristics. Species richness and diversity were highest at the 0 cm topsoil depth and lowest at the 60 cm topsoil depth. Percent canopy cover of grasses was highest (25%) at 60 cm and lowest (15%) at 0 cm topsoil depth. Percent forb cover was highest (6%) at the 0 cm depth and lowest (2%) at 60 cm topsoil depth. Seeded species cover was highest (12%) at the 40 cm depth, but was not significantly different from the other depths. Aboveground biomass was similar between the 40 (727 kg ha -1 ) and 60 cm (787 kg ha -1 ) topsoil depths and higher than the 0 (512 kg ha -1 ) and 20 cm (506 kg ha -1 ) replacement depths. Plant species richness and diversity decreased with increasing topsoil depth, while biomass increased. Organic C mass in the soil profile (75 cm) was greatest in the 60 cm topsoil replacement (18.7 Mg C ha -1 ) and lowest in the 0 and 20 cm treatments (11.3 and 10.5 Mg C ha -1, respectively). N mass (75 cm profile) exhibited a similar pattern with 60 cm of topsoil having the highest (1.9 Mg N ha -1 ) and the 0 and 20 cm the lowest (0.8 Mg N ha -1 and 0.9 Mg N ha -1, respectively). Soil N, organic C, and infiltration data indicate topsoil replacement depths of 40 and 60 cm provide the best nutrient status and water storage potential for sustainable reclamation.Ĭumulative water infiltration was highest (134 mm) for the 40 cm topsoil depth followed by 60 cm (116 mm), and lowest (61 mm) for the 0 cm treatment. Placement of shallow topsoil replacement depths should be carefully planned to ensure topsoil thickness is adequate to sustain a vegetative community capable of protecting the soil surface against erosion. ![]() Variable topsoil replacement depths can be used in reclamation to manipulate plant community characteristics and create a mosaic of vegetation types. However, the reduced vegetation cover observed at the shallower topsoil depths may not protect against soil erosion therefore, using variable topsoil depth replacement as a reclamation practice will require careful planning and implementation.Deep is good, right? True, it's not rocket science, nevertheless, there are important things to know. Whether its planting bare root trees or balled and burlaped trees, one thing is consistent, most people do not know the correct planting depth for a tree. Probably the number one mistake we make is in planting the tree too deeply. The problem is more serious than it appears. It all boils down to the roots and how deeply they are planted.
